Following the war of succession Spain was left with a sickly and inept ruler who was walked all over by nobility who extorted the crown and worked only for personal gain. Spanish colonies paid little attention to what went on back in Spain.

Only remaining show of stability was the navy.

When the Bourbons took control they centralized the government yet still gave nobles independence of control in provinces. One of the major absolutist acts by the Spanish was the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territories.
